Osteopathy

Diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders

CONTACT US

Osteopathy is a holistic (that means we look at the whole you, not just the bit that hurts) system of healthcare that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders – that’s problems with your bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and connective tissues.

As an Osteopath, I use a variety of gentle, hands-on techniques to improve the function of your body and relieve pain. We believe that your body has an inherent ability to heal itself, and our job is to help remove any obstacles that are getting in the way of that natural process.

Think of it like this: if one part of your body isn’t moving properly, it can affect other areas. For example, a problem in your lower back could lead to pain in your hip or even your shoulder. We aim to find the root cause of your pain and address it, rather than just treating the symptoms.

What Sort of Things Can Osteopathy Help With?

You might be surprised at the range of conditions that Osteopathy can help with. Here are just a few common examples we see here in Redditch:

Back Pain: Whether it’s a dull ache or a sharp twinge, Osteopathy can often provide significant relief.

Neck Pain: From stiffness after a bad night’s sleep to more chronic issues.

Shoulder and Elbow Pain: Including things like frozen shoulder and tennis elbow.

Hip and Knee Pain: Arthritis, bursitis, and general aches and pains.

Headaches: Especially those that originate from the neck (cervicogenic headaches).

Sciatica: That pesky pain that runs down your leg.

Sports Injuries: Helping you recover and get back in the game.

Postural Problems: Addressing imbalances that can lead to pain and discomfort.

Pregnancy-Related Pain: Gentle techniques to help with the aches and pains of pregnancy.

Baby and Child Issues: From colic to plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome) – we use very gentle approaches for the little ones.

What to expect?

When you come for your first appointment, I’ll take a thorough medical history and ask you lots of questions about your current problem and your general health.

I’ll then carry out a careful physical examination, which may involve looking at your posture, how you move, and gently feeling different parts of your body.

Based on this assessment, I’ll give you a diagnosis and discuss a treatment plan with you. This might involve a range of hands-on techniques, such as:

Massage: To release muscle tension and improve circulation.

Articulation: Gentle movements to restore joint mobility.

Manipulation: Skilled, quick movements to help restore movement and reduce pain (you might hear a little “pop”).

Muscle Energy Techniques: Using your own muscle contractions to help improve joint movement.

Cranial Osteopathy: A very gentle approach that focuses on the subtle movements of the bones in the head and spine.

I’ll also give you advice on things you can do at home, such as exercises and lifestyle changes, to help manage your condition and prevent future problems.

FAQs

Is Osteopathy just about bones?

Not at all! While “osteo” refers to bone, we look at the whole musculoskeletal system, including muscles, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissues. We understand how all these parts work together.

Is it painful?

Generally, Osteopathic treatment is gentle. You might feel some discomfort during certain techniques, especially if the area is already inflamed, but I’ll always work within your comfort levels and explain everything I’m doing.

Is Osteopathy regulated?

Yes, Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession in the UK. All Osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and adhere to strict standards of practice and professional conduct.
